Dean Thistle

I joined Chambers in 2010, and have since established a busy common law practice. Before joining Chambers I practiced as a Solicitor Advocate for three years.

My clients particularly value both my detailed case preparation as well the pragmatic advice I provide, which enables them to make informed decisions. I also have a reputation for skilled and carefully considered advocacy.

I have particular expertise in the civil arena including contractual disputes, landlord and tenant matters, and property and trust disputes, including contested probate matters acting for clients ranging from individuals to large commercial organisations. I have comprehensive experience of both fast and multi-track proceedings.

Within family law I specialise in cohabitation (TOLATA) and matrimonial finance proceedings, with particular experience of acting in cases involving children, including applications brought under Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989.

I work hard to support vulnerable clients and those who find it difficult to undertake legal proceedings. I have experience of working with interpreters or other intermediaries as necessary to help you overcome any communication barriers you may have.

I am known as a diligent, hard-working advocate and have a reputation for providing frank and realistic advice. My previous experience as a Solicitor Advocate enables me to gain a rounded perspective on cases and to advise you on the necessary legal preparation for your case.

I also frequently provide CPD accredited seminars to advise solicitors in civil and family law.

Private Law (Child Arrangements Programme)

My Family Law practice encompasses all aspects of private law proceedings, acting for a parent, grandparent or child.

My experience in this area includes dealing with residence and contact disputes including those involving allegations of sexual abuse (including where those allegations have been fabricated), drug/alcohol abuse and domestic violence. I also represent clients seeking injunctive relief through non-molestation or occupation orders, and can support you in proceedings involving removal from the jurisdiction.

I have appeared at all levels of the Family Court up to and including the Court of Appeal.

Divorce and Matrimonial Finance

I have a firm grasp of the recent and ongoing changes in the Family Court and have appeared at all levels of the Family Court up to and including the Court of Appeal. My expertise in this area is such that I regularly update solicitors by presenting legal seminars.

I can support you in any type of hearing in this area – from procedural matters to multi-day final hearings. My clients’ situations have included complex asset portfolios, overseas properties and pre-nuptial agreements, and my experience also includes dealing with interests or shares in companies or jointly owned businesses. I have also worked with clients to protect their assets where a ‘second family’ is involved.

You may have begun proceedings by representing yourself but now find that you would benefit from some expert legal support. I would be happy to discuss how I could assist you in such circumstances.

I am also experienced in dealing with applications under Schedule 1 Children Act 1989.

Civil Partnership & Cohabitation Dispute

My experience of both family proceedings and civil cases gives me considerable and well-rounded experience of TOLATA and other cohabitation disputes, to such a degree that I also advise solicitors through CPD accredited seminars.

If you are concerned about protecting your property on the break-down of a relationship, ideally I would advise you before you begin any proceedings to ensure that you are able to make a fully informed decision at throughout proceedings. However I am experienced at representing clients throughout the proceedings to final hearing and can provide advice at any stage.

I can advise you and assist with drafting documents at any stage as well as representing you during proceedings.

Property and Land Law

I regularly act both for landlords and tenants of private or commercial properties, appearing in the County Court as well as the First-Tier Tribunal (Property Chamber) in relation to trusts of land and leasehold disputes, including disrepair claims, unlawful eviction and harassment as well as possession claims.

I can advise you before the commencement of any proceedings to ensure that you are able to make fully informed decisions at that stage, and represent you throughout the proceedings to final hearing, detailed assessment of costs and enforcement.
