Clive Styles

My practice in the South East has been established for over 30 years, acting for increasing numbers of Direct Public Access clients. I specialise particularly in Family law, and in dealing with contested probate matters and Inheritance Act claims.

Many of my clients choose me for my reputation for getting quickly to the central point of a case, and for offering them realistic and clear advice from the outset. If a case goes to court, they value the vigour and tenacity with which I fight their case.

As my client, you’ll find I am committed to finding the best possible outcomes for you, and that I aim to provide you with a flexible service that meets your needs. This might include holding any meetings with you at a venue most convenient to you, whether at one of the Chambers’ locations or elsewhere. I am not restricted to in Kent or Sussex, being prepared to travel further afield to represent you if needs be.

Public Law Children

I am regularly instructed to represent local authorities, parents, guardians and the Official Solicitor. My experience includes highly sensitive cases involving allegations of sexual abuse and non-accidental injury as well as neglect or emotional harm to children, and the need for Emergency Protection Orders. These cases have also involved issues of Jurisdiction, and working with clients whose first language is not English.

I have considerable experience of working with parents who have significant learning difficulties, mental health issues or difficulties with substance abuse.

Private Law (Child Arrangements Programme)

I have considerable experience of representing parents and children in private law cases.

These family disputes are often highly complex and can seem impossible to resolve, where one side or other (or indeed both) remains intractable. My aim is to support you and assist you in reaching an agreement acceptable to all parties – and of course in the best interests of your child/ren. Issues in this area of law might include an application to change your children’s surname or to remove them from the jurisdiction (ie to another part of the country, or to a different country). My experience also includes cases involving child abduction, acting in fact finding hearings involving allegations of sexual abuse or serious domestic violence, and working with parents or family members with severe PTSD.

Ms M Instructing Clive Styles through the Direct Access Scheme – November 2021

I just wanted to send a quick message to say thank you for all your help and your clerks during this process. I couldn’t have done it without you

Mr A Instructing Clive Styles through the Direct Access Scheme – October 2021

“For what was the most stressful period of my life, Mr Styles was able to provide a reassuring presence.and I always believed he would achieve the best outcome for my family.  The case involved a particularly belligerent litigant in person, yet he was handled firmly, but fairly.

Under the direct access scheme, dealing with the court paperwork can still be quite onerous, but Mr Styles was on hand  to explain things to me, which saved me the additional costs of using a solicitor.  English is not my first language, but Mr Styles was very clear in his discussions with me.

I always felt that Mr Styles was in control of the situation no matter how difficult the other party tried to make it. He managed my expectations throughout, and often came up with pragmatic and workable solutions, including saving further costs by persuading the Judge to cancel the second day of the final hearing.

Now that I have come out the other side of the process, I am glad that I was your client.

I would be happy to recommend you and your firm to handle family proceedings.”

Divorce and Matrimonial Finance

If you are involved in a financial dispute with your former spouse, or co-habitant where you weren’t married (TOLATA claims), I can help you reach a resolution.

My recent cases have involved detailed analysis of company business accounts, dealing with arrangements where there were substantial farming assets and acting for clients where there were international elements. I also have experience of acting for clients with substantial inherited wealth.

Whether your situation is fairly straightforward or involved complications such as your spouse’s reluctance to dispose of assets, I can assist you with finding an outcome, and my approach is generally to ensure that all involved are able to afford suitable accommodation for themselves or any children.

“…Mr Styles was excellent…thanks for all your support with this…”
